Starbucks says to try these classics during its 13-drink reduction

A broader strategy to streamline business will see the coffee giant reduce its menu by 30% over the next few months.

Starbucks (SBUX) is replacing some of its most popular drinks with better-selling items on Monday, March 3. To help make the transition easier, the company is offering customers classic drinks they can customize.

To make room for new items, CEO Brian Niccol plans to trim 30% of the company’s menu by September 2025. This is part of his “Back to Starbucks” strategy. Niccol says Starbucks should return to its roots as a coffeehouse, with freshly brewed coffee available in four minutes or less.

Along with the menu changes, Starbucks is restricting app orders, limiting customers to 12 items at once. As part of this big fix, the company has also reintroduced ceramic mugs, as well as handwritten notes on cups, but the latter has left baristas a bit frazzled.

As part of its TV advertising campaign, the Seattle-based coffee chain will also bring in two former Taco Bell executives. Though it has slashed thousands of corporate jobs recently, the company says it will increase hiring efforts and bring back condiment bars. Additionally, Starbucks plans to keep prices steady through 2025 while reducing non-dairy milk alternatives costs.

The company has made some changes despite these efforts, but not all. Following the arrest of two Black men in a Philadelphia store in 2018, the company reverted to its open-door policy, which generated backlash. Niccol says Starbucks stands by its policy shift since it would rather close its locations than return to its previous stance.

Especially in China, Starbucks’ second-largest market, Starbucks is facing declining sales and rising competition, which prompted these cuts and operational changes. Luckin’ Coffee (LKNCY) and the growing bubble tea company Mixue Group are among those steadily snatching market share from local brands.
